The best time to visit Uzbekistan

The best time to visit Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan has a sharply continental climate: hot, dry summers and cold, short winters. That gives you two genuinely comfortable travel windows, spring and autumn, and two seasons that reward travellers who know what they are getting into.

Spring, late March to late May

This is the season most travellers should aim for. Daytime temperatures across Samarkand and Bukhara sit in a pleasant range for long days of walking, the steppe turns green, and orchards in the Fergana Valley come into blossom.

Navruz, the spring new year, falls on 21 March and is the warmest, most social moment in the Uzbek calendar. Expect neighbourhood feasts, sumalak cooked overnight in huge cauldrons, and music in every mahalla. Book accommodation well ahead for that week.

Autumn, September to early November

Our own favourite. The fierce summer heat breaks in September, the light turns golden across the tiled domes, and the bazaars fill with melons, grapes, pomegranates and fresh walnuts. Photography is at its best in October.

Autumn is also the harvest season, which means cooking classes, village stays and craft workshops are at their liveliest. If you want the country at its most generous, come now.

Summer, June to August

The lowland cities regularly pass 40 degrees in July and August. It is genuinely hot, and midday sightseeing is uncomfortable. That said, summer is quiet and prices soften.

If summer is your only option, plan around it: monuments early and late, long lunches indoors, and time in the mountains. The Nuratau range and the Zaamin highlands are ten to fifteen degrees cooler than Samarkand and turn a difficult month into a good one.

Winter, December to February

Cold, sometimes snowy, and very quiet. Samarkand under fresh snow with almost nobody in the Registan square is a rare sight, and hotel rates are at their lowest.

Pack seriously warm clothes, accept shorter daylight, and be aware that mountain and desert routes can be affected by weather. For city focused heritage travel, winter works well.

So which month should you pick?

For the best balance of weather, colour and atmosphere: October, then April, then May, then September. For the lowest prices and emptiest monuments: January and February. For festivals and celebration: the second half of March.

Tell us your dates and we will shape the route around the season rather than forcing a fixed itinerary onto the wrong month.
