The Holy City of Central Asia, Bukhara has been a centre of Islamic theology, scholarship and trade for more than a thousand years. Its remarkably preserved old town is a living museum with over 140 medieval architectural monuments.

Why visit

Bukhara's old town is a living quarter, not a museum: more than a hundred protected monuments stand among houses, workshops and tea houses. The Poi-Kalyan ensemble, Lyabi-Hauz pool and the tenth-century Samanid mausoleum can all be reached on foot in a single morning.

Tour Highlights

  • Ark Fortress
  • Lyab-i Hauz Complex
  • Ismail Samani Mausoleum
  • Chor Minor
  • Trading Domes

What you can do

Climb the Ark fortress walls, sit under the mulberries at Lyabi-Hauz, browse the trading domes for scissors, suzani and karakul, visit Chor Minor at sunrise and take an evening walk to the Samanid mausoleum in the park.

Where to stay

Restored merchant houses turned into small hotels around Lyabi-Hauz offer carved doors and courtyard breakfasts; larger hotels sit outside the old town.

Food

Bukhara plov with quince and raisins, shivit oshi, and sweet halva from the bazaars. Meat-free versions of plov and soups need advance notice; several old-town restaurants now list vegetarian sets.

How to get there

Afrosiyob from Tashkent takes about 3h50 and from Samarkand about 1h30. Bukhara airport has domestic and some regional flights. The station at Kagan is 15 km from the old town.

When to visit

April to May and September to October. Summer days often exceed 40C, though evenings by Lyabi-Hauz stay pleasant.

Transport

Taxis from Kagan station take 20-25 minutes. Within the old town everything is walkable; electric carts operate on the main axis.

Practical information

The old town is pedestrian-friendly but paved with uneven stone. Many craft workshops close by 18:00. Bargaining in the trading domes is expected and friendly.

Safety

Low crime and a calm atmosphere. Watch footing on uneven stone lanes after dark, as street lighting is deliberately soft.
