Uzbekistan Travel Tips for First Timers

Money

Bring crisp USD or EUR, torn notes are refused. ATMs work in cities; outside, cash is king. The local som is fine but you will carry bricks of it.

SIM card

Buy a Beeline or Ucell SIM at the airport for around $5. Coverage is good even in the desert.

Etiquette

Greet with hand on heart. Remove shoes when entering homes. Friday is a busy day at mosques, be respectful.

Food

Plov, shashlik, samsa, lagman. Eat the seasonal melons. Tap water, boil or buy bottled.

Getting around

The high-speed Afrosiyob train links Tashkent–Samarkand–Bukhara in comfort. Book ahead in season.

Safety

Uzbekistan is one of the safest countries in the region. Normal city precautions apply.
