Uzbekistan's southernmost region. Surkhandarya unites Buddhist ruins of ancient Termez, holy shrines, dramatic waterfalls and the UNESCO-listed Boysun cultural space.

Why visit

Surkhandarya is Uzbekistan's deep south, where Buddhist stupas at Fayaz-Tepa and Kara-Tepa sit near the Afghan border and the Baysun mountains hold villages whose spring ritual traditions are recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Very few travellers come here, and the landscape changes from cotton plain to alpine gorge in two hours.

Tour Highlights

  • Termez archaeology & Buddhist Karatepa / Fayaztepa
  • Sultan Saodat & Al-Hakim at-Termizi shrines
  • Jarkurgan minaret
  • Sangardak waterfall
  • Boysun mountains

What you can do

See the Buddhist sites of Fayaz-Tepa and Kara-Tepa and the Termez Archaeological Museum, the Al-Hakim at-Termizi mausoleum, the Sultan Saodat complex, and drive to Baysun for mountain villages, Omonxona spring and the Boysun Bahori festival in spring.

Where to stay

Termez has a few modern hotels. In the Baysun district accommodation is mostly family homestays, which are also the best way to meet the local craft and music traditions.

Food

Southern cooking is heavier on lamb and dairy. Baysun households make their own bread, qatiq and mountain herb dishes; vegetarian meals are easy to arrange in homestays, vegan ones need a clear request because dairy is used freely.

How to get there

Flights from Tashkent to Termez take about 1h40. The Tashkent-Termez sleeper train runs overnight through Karshi. Baysun is roughly 3 hours by road north of Termez.

When to visit

March to May and October to November. Termez summers regularly pass 45C and are genuinely difficult; the Baysun highlands stay cooler.

Transport

Fly or take the night train to Termez, then hire a car with driver for Baysun and the mountain villages. Public transport into the highlands is infrequent.

Practical information

This is a border region: carry your passport, expect checkpoints on roads towards the Afghan frontier and do not photograph border installations. Mobile coverage thins in the mountains.

Safety

Safe for travellers, with border-zone document checks. Mountain roads are unpaved in places and should not be driven at night; summer heat on the plain is a real health risk.
