A quiet agricultural region along the great Syr Darya river. Off the typical tourist trail, Sirdarya offers an honest glimpse of rural Uzbekistan.

Why visit

Sirdarya is Uzbekistan's smallest and least visited region: irrigated steppe along the Syr Darya river, the planned Soviet-era town of Yangiyer and the Shirinsoy wetlands, which attract migrating flamingo and pelican in spring and autumn.

Tour Highlights

  • Syr Darya river landscapes
  • Cotton fields in autumn
  • Traditional kishlak life
  • Local mahalla cuisine
  • Day trip from Tashkent

What you can do

Birdwatch at the Shirinsoy and Sardoba reservoirs, see the Syr Darya floodplain, and look at Yangiyer as a preserved example of mid-century Soviet town planning.

Where to stay

Accommodation is limited to basic hotels in Gulistan. Most visitors come as a day trip from Tashkent.

Food

Roadside tandoor bread, steppe-style shurpa and river fish. Vegetarian options are limited; bring supplies for a birdwatching day.

Vegetarian: on requestVegan: not available

How to get there

Gulistan, the regional centre, is about 2 hours from Tashkent by road or regional train on the Samarkand line.

When to visit

March to May and September to November, which are also the bird migration windows. Summer on the steppe is very hot and offers little shade.

Transport

Regional trains and shared taxis from Tashkent to Gulistan; a hired car is needed to reach the reservoirs.

Practical information

There is no tourist infrastructure at the wetlands: no visitor centre, no marked hides, no cafes. Binoculars and your own transport are essential.

Safety

Safe but empty. Distances between settlements are long, so start with a full tank and enough water.
